Short intro

Live Peace in Toronto 1969 is a live album by the Plastic Ono Band, released in December 1969 on Apple Records. Recorded at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival festival, it was the first live album released by any member of the Beatles separately or together. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono received a phone call from the festival's promoters John Brower and Kenny Walker, and then assembled a band in a very short time to play at the festival, which was due to start the following day. The Plastic Ono Band played eight songs to the 25,000 strong crowd. They were introduced by Kim Fowley, and John said to the crowd that the group were going to play only songs that they knew. Johns then latest song, Cold Turkey, and Yokos Dont Worry Kyoko Mummys Only Looking for Her Hand in the Snow had their first public outings at the festival. Their set was released as the album Live Peace in Toronto 1969. The video also features a selection of other acts: Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley. The actual concert lasted twelve hours and included Alice Cooper and Chicago Transit Authority among other acts, but Pennebaker's documentary focuses mainly on the final hours of the concert. At the time of the performance Yoko Ono's popularity was sufficiently low that the audience booed and left the Plastic Ono Band performance. There was a similar response from film reviewers at the time. Thrown together literally on the wing they rehearsed only on the flight from England, the ad-hoc band consisting of Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voorman on bass, and Alan White on drums hit the stage to the surprise and delight of the thousands who packed Varsity Stadium. We're just going to do numbers we know, you know, because we've never played together before, confesses John, who was reportedly extremely nervous before going on. Album 1969 8 Songs. Live Peace opens with this enormous, bone-rattling guitar lick - but its just Eric Clapton tuning up. He hasnt sounded so good since he played on a Jackie Lomax single earlier in the year. Whatever and however, the album, as a bootleg disc and as pure music, is almost unbelievable. It captures every thrill of the Stones live on stage, 1969, and in fact it offers more, in someways, than the concerts did - because it sounds even better. The turn-around violence of their sound, the ripping hardness of the guitars, and the energy of the rhythm section is all here. Jagger himself emerges as perhaps the most imaginative singer we have, if we didnt know it already.
