He performed in festivals in England and France and worked with Johnny Dankworth, Michael Garrick, and Brian Priestley. In 1976, his group called the Don Rendell Five which featured saxophonist Barbara Thompson issued Just Music on Spotlite, showcasing Thompson. The band played together for seven years and during this fruitful time they made a plethora of deeply melodic, post-bop British jazz compositions that later on took influences from Indo and more spiritually guided jazz. The Rendell-Carr Quintet was unique in the 1960s for playing all original material, predominantly their own or occasionally that of their friends. Their style was, for want of a better term, iconoclastic, from the outset. No other group sounded like them and it was no coincidence that they won so many Melody Maker jazz polls. The RCQ was voted top small group in the Melody Maker Jazz Poll British Section for three years running from 1967-1969. Similarly Ian Carr was voted top trumpeter for those same three years. Suggestions are that the individual albums are due around April. Don't spend more than you have to just for a box. Prices for this should drop, if they don't then buy them separately.

After some trouble finding it, I finally got it and I must say I'm amazed by this box set. I had always found that Jazzman Records pressings were noisy with a lot of flaws but here ? Top notch pressings, silent vinyl even in the quieter moments, with a good polylined innersleeve (finally). Sound is very dynamic and crisp, and the covers are well-made, with a love for the detail. Congrats to Jazzman !

I personally don't mind the flippers. A flipper is just someone who purchased a record and sells it faster than the average, right? How different is it from us? Do you really think they won't sleep because people complain on this thread? If someone here sells it in 2 years , is she/he a (slow) flipper? Tell me.That's the rule of the game, deal with it. If you love vinyls you know the deal. If you find a rare record at a garage sales, are you going to resell it for the price you paid it there? Or will you try to sell it at the maximum current price you could, checking its value on Discogs? You do do that everytime, for your house, for your family expenses, for your collections etc...Unless you are a saint or a millionaire or in an urgent need of money you will do as every seller does: buy cheap and sell high. Flippers on Discogs are music lovers I have no doubt about it. But they are also music traders . I like discussing with them (some have physical shops), they have a lot of knowledge to share and I'm learning/feeding from them (blogs, websites, stores, comments etc). They sometimes contribute to the community by adding releases. Making money is just their way of living, cannot criticize it, can you? Some are not professional too and they want to finance their other music purchases (at least that's their belief, I think they are wrong though)I would say that it's up to the labels to make sure flippers don't flip, because human nature is...well you know ;-) By a better control of their new releases they could avoid damages like the one below. I'm not mad someone here is trying to sell at £800. Why not, it's funny (a bit frustrating if you don't have the release I can reckon it).I don't have the release. I wanted it so bad. My order got cancelled. I put a pretty bad comment here (it has been censored since) about Jazzman, because I thought a better work could have been done. Maybe I'm wrong. But guess what I moved on. I realize I could live without it. I just had a childish reaction but life goes on, my money will go elsewhere. Fabulous music is everywhere so let's enjoy.... let flippers be flippers if that's their wishes, just be yourself, be smart and think with your wallet.

"They have destroyed the reputation of record Store Day"... I cannot agree more, that's why I have stopped buying on Record Store Day for some years now... don't worry, you will survive it (frustration is healthy sometimes)PS: if you DO mind the flippers, what a waste of time & energy IMO... just saying.Best

“I personally don’t mind the flippers”. You gotta be joking! Sorry but I put them on the same level as ticket touts, i.e. they’re just parasites spoiling it for everyone else in the shameless pursuit of a quick profit. They have destroyed the reputation of Record Store Day.

I agree with what you say but I think that when people are taking it to the extreme it is just plain wrong - I would not have a problem seeing this sell for £200 or there about but £400+ is depriving someone from doing what is meant to be done with this music, which is enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with buying something for one price and then selling it for higher (flipping) but there's a way of doing it that doesn't offend the general consensus.

I think these flippers have had their day now with this record. It's coming down in price in a big way. I can see it settling down at the £200 mark eventually but they'll still be some fu$%ing idiots deluded enough to think it'll sell for £800. To those sellers I would say poke it where the sun doesn't shine.

My order has been cancelled by the website I placed it with (item not available...). Really a pain as this is beautiful music. If someone has a copy to sell for "reasonable price" (around 150/180EUR which is almost double to retail price) please contact me. This is really becoming a blueprint of "flippers" situation and bad influence, what a shame!

I am surprised that demand far exceeded the 1000 sets. The Steve Hillage Box at about £200 took a while to sell and that was 2500 pieces. But then again Hillage originals are not rare species of vinyl, which is why this release has attracted so much interest. I suspect this release has been over subscribed to speculators more than a frenzy on Record Store Day. I wonder if the demand is there this set could be licensed to an interested party in Japan and demand in the rest of the world will be satisfied

I got my set in this week, I ordered way back in late September or early October. Was unclear for a long time if my order was going to be filled. The sound quality exceeded my expectations and the packaging is top notch. Only minor gripe is that the Jackets are tough to get in and out of the slip cover. I will probably sleeve and shelve them individually to avoid any bumps or creases. Bravo to Jazzman for this release.

Managed to secure a copy, 3 times the original cost but so glad i did. Jazzman have indeed done a wonderful job on these, beautiful package and they sound great. It is a shame about distribution etc but its clear to see that this was a labour of love and at this stage i am just so happy i was able to get a copy at any price. Hopefully they do get a reissue soon and everyone who wants to gets a chance to hear this wonderful music on vinyl, and if the quality of the pressings are as good as these then even better. Thanks to Jazzman and sincere apologies for my earlier comment, and cheers to Jazz Detective for enabling me to get a copy.

Well, round the same time you bought yours for 3 times the original cost I purchased mine for 104 Euro. It arrived yesterday, it is indeed a perfect reissue, beautifully done and I'm happy I bought it but I'm certainly happier that I didn't buy it for the prices quoted here. My advise is do not feed the flippers. As much as I like (correction: love) these albums I would never buy a copy of the box set from here for these prices. I sincerely hope the box set gets a second reissue by Jazzman or Universal the soonest possible so that more people get the albums and the prices go down.

My Pre Order has been cancelled..I guess once sellers realise that their 130$ record may fetch them triple that amount it's no wonder...And I have to agree why after taking a reputedly 20 years to bring this to fruition only 1000 copies...ahem. Great work however IF you can get it

I had similar issue. I ordered it from Phonica’s website (at the time it was showing as “in-stock” so I was entitled to expect to get a copy). They took my money. I waited, waited, then eventually got an e-mail saying it was out of stock. So f**k you Phonica. I’ll never order from you again. They didn’t even have the courtesy to reply to my e-mail querying whether they were going to get any more stock in. What happened to the copy that was in stock when I ordered it? Probably bought and flipped by a staff member I bet. Reading other music forums I can see this release has just created a complete sh!tstorm of frustration for genuine jazz fans.

Funny how the number of offered copies fluctuates here all the time, copies appear for sale, obviously always in outrageous prices as it would be a 'crime' to sell in normal prices but no copy appears to have been sold yet through discogs. Strange isn't it? Not to mention that some of the sellers/flippers have less feedback/seller history than my grannie. I wonder why...

Yours is not the only post that was deleted here. A couple of days ago one of my posts mysteriously "disappeared" as the original post was deleted. Just to let you know that I read your post before it 'vanished' and I agree 100% with what you wrote. My only objection is that you could get your point across with less f words - still being in the exact same situation I do understand your frustation. Apart from that I am with you all the way - hope you will read this before it's deleted - which I am sure will be.

Waiso

The only wording that secures that these LP records are all/fully analog, is "CUT and remastered from the original tapes". Otherwise, if only remastered is mentioned, then it means that the records are cut from the 24/96 (or whatever other resolution/bit depth) digital files - and these files (and only them) are the outcome of the remastering of the original (analog in this case) tapes.

Considering the cost to purchase individual used copies of the original LPs included in this box, I think this release will top out about about $5,000 (for a new/sealed copy) on the secondary market.I paid ~$140 USD total (including shipping to the U.S.) for this boxset. In the near future, the $300 to $500 price we're seeing right now will look like a great deal.As we now know, any potential repress from Jazzman is far from guaranteed. So, assume the worst in terms of future availability.

Some mean comments on here about Jazzman. I think they've done a great job in both look and sound. This release was no secret so i wonder why people didn't source/order copies earlier. My local shop ordered mine for me which i collected today. It was surely obvious that it would be popular and in great demand. 1000 copies makes sense. The manufacturing costs let alone getting the rights to release would be high so why put yourself at risk by making too many. I would imagine there will be a 2nd run whether that's via Jazzman or Universal themselves, time will tell.
Lianeni

Totally agree. The quality of this set is second-to-none. Jazzman have done an amazing job. The 1000 copy run could have been a stipulation from Universal or it could have been caution or common sense - I’m not qualified to say. I can’t see how Jazzman have made much money from this release, though - they really should just be respected for the love and attention to detail they’ve given this great music.

In response to some of the comments below from frustrated users, from Jazzman and myself (project manager of this release):Jazzman had been trying to license these five rare LPs as a "dream" reissue project for many years. It took a long time to persuade and secure publishing/mechanical/artwork rights from Universal and at the time of finally brokering a license (around a year ago) Jazzman was unsure of precisely what the level of demand might be for such an expensive box set. The license cost was astronomical before even considering the manufacturing cost of lookalike flipback sleeves and textured slipcases. 1000 copies were agreed upon primarily because Jazzman LPs are pressed in runs of usually just 1000 apiece. The inked deal sadly does not allow for represses and to do so requires another contract to be agreed. Jazzman is hoping to be able to press more of these LPs in 2019, possibly even just as individual sealed albums, but this is wholly dependant on the agreement of the license holders. As many know, major labels are often laissez-faire about the material they own until it begins to sell through third-party deals like this one and, now that the high demand for this box is more evident, it's possible that Universal will want to release a similar repress themselves; not allowing any other independent label a look-in.Distribution into retail is not controlled by Jazzman, of course. If some stores scored 50 units and others none, that's down to the bulk distributors. I should point out that this item was made available for pre-sale, directly from Jazzman, in September 2018. Once the copies actually arrived with Jazzman HQ in December and were announced online, they unexpectedly sold out in minutes. Jazzman is staffed by one (Jazz) man, however. He has no PR, research, sales or marketing teams to assess exact demand nor immediately respond to huge influxes of emails, social media messages etc. Apologies to those who asked for copies too late and didn't get a timely response. Jazzman has been somewhat inundated. Hinsight is 20-20, as they say. We hope that Jazzman can secure another pressing as soon as possible.Boneswww.grandvinyl.com

Think I ordered from the same retailer. Distributor assured me they were getting it in. Retailer said it was in Warehouse on Wednesday and i got the cancellation email Thursday night. Contacted them today and was told they didn't get any. Probably could have got one off Juno if I'd have known.Found one on a Danish retail site but doubt they have it . Not down to Jazzman they sent an email early November to say pre_sales were sold out and to make these records so affordable was really commendable. Doubt they will make much out of it.

Thanks very much for your detailed message and I understand all the issues brought about by licensing, mechanicals etc. but sadly I don’t think it’s stops there. For Jazzman I share in any disappointment they may have as the dismay caused was clearly unintended. I think that this has resulted in the release being as controversial as much as it has been applauded and what set out to be a labour of love has maybe backfired somewhat. I doubt it will in any way harm Jazzman's reputation.I’m not looking to cover old ground here as a lot has already been said. As one friend pointed out, these recordings are clearly a big deal and have been for years so of course the discontentment for many of its immediate unavailability, demand far outweighing supply and typical Discogs re-sale prices is obvious.Like many others my disappointment stems from the distribution problems. I pre-ordered the box set in good time and in good faith at RRP from a large reputable UK online retailer. I was given no reason to believe that my order wouldn't be fulfilled as presumably they already had stock allocated in order for them to be offering it for sale. An online transaction that was successful but then to be withdrawn at the eleventh hour is obviously not the norm. All I would add is this. Distribution into retail is not controlled by Jazzman. I understand that. However, in the light of the issues that I and presumably many other lovers of this music have suffered, the issues caused by the retail distribution can only reflect on Jazzman. There has to be some accountability and I would expect that Jazzman will take steps so that problems like this are avoided going forward, and to take heed of those who like me received an email saying sorry but six weeks on here's a full refund, while keeping half an eye on the bedlam taking place on this very website. Surely there has to be a better way.

Many of us have been waiting for years for these recordings to be officially reissued and recognize that once again Jazzman has come through with the impossible. Kudos to you guys and please keep up the good work. All the best.

Be cheaper to buy the originals the way the prices on these are going

Seeing as how original copies of the first three titles alone have collectively together fetched up to over $4,000.00 here on the 'scogs, I'd say that this box, at least at some of the lower boosted prices, is still a bargain.

I strongly advise people to get on Juno with immediate effect as the record is just in stock and they should have multiple copies.

sold out within minutes - i had it in cart etc and when i went to pay it was already gone. fuck me.

Jazzman certainly aren't shit. That's pretty disrespectful. They did an incredible job of this, it's maybe the best reissue I've ever come across. The vinyl sounds outrageously good. The sleeves are perfect, inner sleeves perfect and cool looking. I do not foresee a second pressing of the reissue.

Well said, this is a Herculean effort from Jazzman, and sold at a very reasonable price.

Let's see. You could be right as there's certainly an appetite.

So was Chris McGregor & The Castle Lager Big Band ‎– Jazz/The African Sound limited to 500 and then came the repress.

Jazzman stated that the boxset was strictly limited to 1000. I understand basic capitalism but I'm only going off the facts.

”I do not foresee a second pressing of the reissue.” Yeah, why on earth a company would like to sell stuff that people want. Jazzman did not ask 500€ for the reissue, some resellers apparently do. I’m 99% sure that there will be a repress or individual releases of the albums in the future.

It was probably the wrong choice of word, based on annoyance and frustration at not being able to secure a copy. What they are is maybe ignorant and badly organised. If they did a good job on the vinyl fair play to them, but the distribution aspect has been a fiasco and not giving out any info and ignoring emails from their Bandcamp page is about as disrespectful as it could get. I might not have been quite as irritated if theyd had the decency to reply to any one of my emails, or if they fixed the glitch on their website that causes an error when you go through that stupid capcha thing so that mail cant be sent from there. Highly ignorant, highly disrespectful. As for my earlier comment about the London shop, i got in touch with them and they deny that they had any such quota. I read the info on a Steve Hoffman thread on the release (page 3 i think), and someone else seems to have purchased one from the shop after reading that post. They didnt have any left by the time i emailed them. I guess now anyone who did end up with multiple copies wouldnt want to be letting go of them at cost price.Anyway i am fed up with the whole thing, wasted enough energy.

Jazzman are shit. They dont reply to email and they have really messed up with the distribution of this thing. So how come so many people got multiple copies. I even heard that a shop in London had about 50. How does that work?
Abuseyourdna

They really could have anticipated. This was in high demand for years, it took jazzman decades to get this published. The purpose of record publishing is to sell as many copies as possible. This is the biggest fail of 2018. Maybe we can start a ‘fail’ end of the year list.

Where are all these people with multiple copies? The ebay listings I've seen have all been for pre-orders, no sellers appear to have copies in hand. I suspect Jazzman have sold almost all the stock themselves, and screwed other retailers who won't receive their stock allocation or be able to fulfil their own pre-order sales. Jazzman seem to have gone very quiet, and are not replying to posts on their Facebook page either. They deserve for this to turn into a PR disaster for them.

No store in London (or elsewhere) got anywhere near 50 copies.
X-MEN

That store is probably a steady and reliable local outlet and reasonably big seller for the Jazzman label's other catalogue releases, so it stands to reason that they would give a nice bit of the pressing to them to sell. I'm sure that the label could not have anticipated just exactly how frenzied the response would come to be for this release in the first place.

If they got license only for 1000 copies (similar to the Mosaic sets), I am afraid it is not obvious that we will see a reprint.

If you’re in the US, it seems to be available from Forced Exposure. I ordered one from them yesterday and got a shipping confirmation.https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/rendell-ian-carr-quintet-don-the-complete-lansdowne-recordings-1965-5lp-box/JMAN.106LP.html

I heard from a rep at FE they were shorted on numbers, and the sets had to be allocated. It was referred to as "brutal", since some people will not be receiving theirs.

Supposed release date now pushed back for the fifth time, to 21.12.18 (if you believe that).

Strange: I usually have great luck with them. I ordered one too - same day 12/7. Got a shipping confirmation on 12/7/18 dated 12/8 receipt of order but now the actual order appears to be erased from my account history on the website and no debit occurred from my bank. FE is almost always solid for me, they may just be maxed on this title and I just missed the mark - who knows.

Same story - no email from Jazzman and now if I only knew I would try to order somewhere else much earlier

I received an in-stock notification email from Jazzman on Sunday 25th November, but didn't order as I already had a pre-order elsewhere that I thought would guarantee me a copy. It was available to order from the Jazzman site for a few hours, but sold out the same day, and no other retailers appear to have received their stock allocation.

So any idea if there will be another pressing? It seems such an oversight not to direct people looking to Bandcamp...were we supposed to just guess

did the same, no email. i contacted jazzman and their answer was 'it sold out in a few hours'. had i known this, i'd have bought it on bandcamp earlier (although it was 30€ more expensive). now it feels like the chance to get my hands on this box has disappeared...

Anyone else hearing a 2-3 second weird noise on Blue Mosque (A1 Shades of Blue)? It sounds like a distortion, no fill or next round groove.
spark

It’s indeed shorter than the 2-3 seconds I mentioned before. I went for that Space Walk and that’s really bad. That said I love the Box, and didn’t buy the Space Walk reissue no matter how bad I wanted it.
Inabel
Inabel
Yes, there's a 1 second burst of digital noise. I'm guessing that's amplified time-code or something. If you want to see trash, take a look at the Don Rendell - Space Walk reissue, it's pathetic, they didn't even utilise one of the mono elements of a stereo channel. They wanted £40 for it and all you can hear is the reverb of one of the saxophones on side 1. It's a disgrace to the Don Rendell legacy.
Thetalen

There's a very brief moment for me too but on a casual listen it only seemed to be a fraction of a second. Nowhere near as bad as the same sound on Mile Davis' So What but still there. From what I've been told it's caused by spit built up in the horn.
Tam

Anyone tempted to drop mega coin on this, hang fire for the general release as there's no way this record has increased in value by £100 before even the record shops have it! I can't believe how fast the vultures have circled around this one.

Demand for this item has been completely frenzied. A person's best bet would be to quickly (as in right now) make a telephone call to any stores in London that regularly carry Jazzman label titles in their racks and ask if they have any copies left in stock and if they will sell and send through the mail a copy ordered (and immediately paid for) over the phone.

Agreed, absolutely stellar. Fantastic all around. A pleasure to hold, read and most importantly, absolutely gorgeous sound. Dead quiet pressings that are crystal clear and dynamic. Only little niggles so far are a half second of spit buzz on Blue Mosque and a bit of tape bleed through on Shades of Blue. (There's nothing that can be done about either so not at all anything to bother worrying over).Absolutely incredible to finally have such gorgeous copies of these albums on my turntable.

Sold out from the label. One seller on eBay has multiple copies going fast. Once this is out of stock from regular vendors, the prices will skyrocket.
Zovaithug
Zovaithug
I don't understand why Jazzman had copies of it (suggesting it had been pressed and was ready) yet no one else does? I just thought that Jazzman were giving themselves a few days of head start to shift some copies, a perfectly reasonable thing to do if you are the person reissuing it.

The boxset itself states it is limited to 1000 copies. That's where I based my opinion.
Dagdage

Regular vendors do not appear to have received any stock. I pre-ordered from Piccadilly Records on 20th October but they haven't had any yet, and the distributor keeps pushing the supposed release date back. First from 23rd November to 30th November, then to 7th December, and now to 14th December. The whole thing stinks to be honest.

I got my copy on the Bandcamp pre-sale as well. Kinda surprised it was available for as long as it was (several weeks).

True, but no one from Jazzman has publicly indicated that they will press more/individual LPs. So while it is theoretically true, there are no guarantees. Unless you have inside info?

Nobody have said that there can’t be a reprint. Why would they go through all that work in remastering and then sell only 1000 copies. Maybe they release the individual albums.

Agreed, it's a now or pay through the nose moment with this. I was lucky enough to grab mine from Jazzman directly through the pre-sale. Much like when the Can - Lost Tapes first came out, I suspect there'll be a lot of regretful individuals wishing they'd maybe asked Santa for a Christmas present or just took the hit.I don't feel qualified to review the music but the package is fantastic and the music speaks for itself.Get it while you can!
