Short intro

Christoph Willibald von Gluck also wrote a setting of ''Armide,'' and it is one of the masterpieces of his last years. An unusual work, in that it is charged with an eroticism rarely encountered in this composer's rarefied and elevated world, ''Armide'' has never attained the popularity of ''Orfeo ed Euridice'' or the ''Iphigenie'' operas, but has always been highly esteemed by connoisseurs. However, a version exists for tenor lead, and it has now been recorded by Peter Hofmann, in tandem with the soprano Julia Conwell, the Chor des Dortmunder Musikvereins and the Philharmonisches Orchester Koln, all under the direction of Heinz Panzer Metronome , three disks.
