Short intro

Child Ballads is a studio album by American singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and musician Jefferson Hamer, released on February 11, 2013, by Wilderland Records. It serves as Mitchell's sixth studio album and Hamer's second. The album is composed of old folk ballads from the collection of the same name by Francis James Child re-arranged by the duo. They recorded the album with producer Gary Paczosa in early 2012. The Child Ballads are a portfolio collection of 305 ballads from England and Scotland plus the ballads' American variants assembled by Francis James Child and originally published as The English and Scottish Popular Ballads in ten volumes between 1882 and 1898, a group of ancient melodies and lyrics that are at the very center of traditional folk music, and versions of these songs. have been recorded and reimagined countless times by countless singers and performers. The existence of Anaïs Mitchell and Jefferson Hamers Child Ballads, a deceptively wispy little collection of old English and Scottish folk songs, seems somehow inevitable. For the last decade or so, the dove-throated Mitchell. Off the Child Ballads album due to be released February 2013. Anaïs Mitchell, Jefferson Hamer. Child Ballads. Mitchell and Hamer arranged old folk ballads from the collection of the same name by Francis James Child. Anaïs Mitchell is wondering whether her new record, Child Ballads, should come with a disclaimer. Because of the name a lot of people think they're kids songs, says the Vermont singer-songwriter. Until they hear them, that is. Rather than the kindergarten, Mitchell's album draws from the most influential and emotionally powerful canon in traditional music. The Child Ballads, a collection of 305 songs, run like a deep, dark seam through the coalface of British folk. Child Ballads is a beautiful album, and the duos mission to make their own mark on these songs is accomplished with delicate aplomb. Set sparingly to two guitars and little more deciding against folk rock arrangements was probably wise, these versions are nevertheless modernised Americanised takes on traditional tales from British social singing. Subplots are dropped and characters cut: shorn of its elfin queen and threatened tithe to hell, Tam Lin has never sounded more tranquil. Anaïs Mitchells sweetening voice remains her most distinctive trait as a performer, and Hamers less striking vocals complement this acquired taste well, cushioning her high pitch. Jefferson Hamer talks us through the albums origins and contents. GM: First, tell us what the Child Ballads mean to you. Are they something you've known forever, or a more recent discovery JH: I didn't grow up in a folk music family. Writing and recording with people like Anaïs Mitchell and Eamon O'Leary- my bandmate in the Murphy Beds- sharpened my perception of what any song, traditional or not, can and ought to be. GM: I was thrilled that you recorded Child 1 - one of my favorites in the entire 305-song collection, but not one that has had too many airings. JH: Riddles Wisely Expounded was the last ballad we worked on before recording the album
